Pacific Coast: Cannon Beach and Astoria

After a breakfast of high-fat ice cream at the Tillamok Cheese Factory it was time to find the morning light at Cannon Beach. The soft morning light belies a tempestuous ocean. This is another place I could have explored for days.

Travelled up the coast to visit Fort Clatsup where the Lewis and Clark expedition spent a very cold wet winter near the mouth of the Columbia river. Then to Astoria for a 125-foot climb up a dizzying circular staircase to grab a view from the top of the Astoria Column.

Spectacular view of the Columbia river from the top of the Astoria column. The huge Astoria-Megler bridge is on the left while ocean going freighters look like toy ships.
